Drawing: where an artwork begins

Drawing is a foundation for making art. Through pencil lines and shading, an artist can express ideas and feelings on paper or drawing board. Learning the basics of graphite drawing provides a useful starting point for different forms of painting.

Where to start

Drawing may feel difficult at first, but skill develops through practice and repetition. Begin with simple geometric shapes such as ellipses, circles and squares, then move on to still-life studies of everyday objects. A suitable pencil, eraser and paper are the basic tools you need.

Why drawing matters

Drawing offers a way to practise observation, concentration and creativity. It is a foundation of many visual arts, and familiarity with it supports progress in painting, graphic design and architecture.

The role of practice

Progress depends above all on regular practice. Even experienced artists keep drawing to maintain their skills. Interest, patience and steady practice help you develop both how you see and how you make an image.
